Chiropractic Care and Pediatric

July 2023 Newsletter

This monthly is extra special to us! We will be learning why chiropractic care is important for infants, toddlers, and expecting mamma’s! Know someone expecting? Send them this link so they can learn with you!

If you’ve been in the office before, then you know first hand how much we love treating babies! We proudly put pictures of them on our wall to watch them grow and change!

Dr. Miller is, as we speak (or write), on his way to a seminar in Florida to learn MORE about how to better adjust our infant and toddler patients! For expecting mothers, Dr. Miller is certified in the Webster Technique. The Webster Technique has become a familiar term in the pregnancy and birth conversation. Families are seeking out chiropractors who are proficient in this technique as a way to support a more comfortable, safer, and easier birth.

Pediatric chiropractic refers to the practice of chiropractic techniques on young people. However, since children’s bodies are still growing and developing, pediatric chiropractors have undergone specialized training to ensure that the care they provide is appropriate and reflects the age of your child. Chiropractic treatment involves manipulating the body and spine to bring the spine into alignment and reduce pressure across the musculoskeletal system so that the body can function optimally, inside and out. Here are just 3 specific ways pediatric chiropractic can help:

Improve your Child’s sleep

Even the smallest misalignment in your child’s spine could be making it harder for them to fall asleep or stay asleep for longer periods. The misalignment could be causing stiffness, pain, or just minor discomfort that wakes them up when they should be sleeping, or affects the quality of their sleep, making them grumpy and irritable. Fortunately, regular chiropractic adjustments that realign the spine have been proven to help improve sleep quality and quantity in both adults and children alike.

Assist in treating and preventing Ear Infections

With chiropractic care, infants find relief from ear pain and infection and a simple manipulation is able to restore the function of the tube. Chiropractic care helps drain the eustachian tube by dilating the muscles around it, thus relieving pressure and unblocking it. Gentle manipulation helps the tube stay unblocked preventing further pain and infection.

Decrease the risk of injury in Toddlers

When your child learns to stand and walk, there is something else that happens as well; they fall - a lot. During this process of trial and error, they fall, they get up and try again, but what they aren’t spared is the risk of injuries. A great way to prevent injuries is regular chiropractic care. An outside injury is easier to see and treat but if there is a strain in a nerve or spine, it is harder to see and know, but not for a chiropractor. A chiropractor is trained to notice even minute changes in the spine or nerve, all with a touch of a hand, leading to early treatment and prevention. If you notice any difference in the way your child is walking or moving, a session with a chiropractor can be useful.

  • Milk of choice. I used oat milk, but you can use any milk you prefer and like. Note that coconut milk won't work well here, because of the flavor.

  • Oats. Hearty, healthy, and filling, oats are stapled food in my pantry. I love using them as a substitute for regular flour. They are an excellent source of fiber especially beta-glucan which is known for its power to lower cholesterol and therefore keep your heart healthy (Source). I used rolled oats here, but you can use quick oats if you like.

  • Sweetener. I used pure maple syrup, but you can easily use honey here if you like.

Other pantry ingredients you’ll need:

  • Egg - I used free-range, pasture-raised.

  • Baking powder.

  • Vanilla extract.

  • Pinch of salt.

  • Extra virgin coconut oil.

How to make Oatmeal Waffles

These oatmeal waffles are the easiest thing to make. It takes 15 minutes to make them, and you'll need only basic equipment.

Equipment used

  • Measuring cups.

  • High-speed blender.

  • Waffle maker.

Step-by-step instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the ingredients.

    • Start with preparing and measuring all the ingredients. I like to use measuring cups.

  • Step 2: Make the waffle batter.

    • Take the blender and add all ingredients. Note: add wet ingredients first for easier blending.

    • Mix everything at high speed until you get a smooth texture.

    • Taste the batter and add additional sweetener if you think the mixture is not sweet enough. Always add sweetener to your liking.

    • Let the batter rest for a few minutes. Oats will soak some of the moisture, and the batter will become nice and dense.

  • Step 3: Bake waffles.

    • Turn on the waffle maker and let it heat until it's hot (the green light must be on).

    • Coat waffle plates with cooking spray or melted coconut oil using the brush.

    • Pour the batter onto the hot waffle plates, close the lid and allow the waffles to cook. Depending on your waffle maker it will take between 8-10 minutes per batch.

    • Once baked, remove waffles from the waffle maker and place them on a cooling rack. Fresh baked waffles will be soft when you take them out of the waffle maker but they will harden as they cool on the rack.

    • Repeating the process with the rest of the batter. Make sure to grease the waffle plates before adding the batter to prevent sticking.

  • Step 4: Serve the waffles.

    • Transfer cooled waffles to a plate.

    • Add toppings (optional): I used banana, blueberries, and maple syrup. Be creative here and add toppings you like.

    • Serve and enjoy!
