All Good Things Must Come to an End
“But it’s only August,” you say, “and Summer isn’t over until September 21st!!” Well that is true, but in 2023 a full third of the U.S. students went back to school between August 12th and August 16th! Many more will go back the week just BEFORE Labor Day which itself falls early this year (Monday September 1st). Then pretty much everyone else will start back on the 4th or shortly thereafter. That means August is the time for back-to school shopping and all the other preparations that will ensure a great school year. Of course, back-to-school shopping and all the other preparations should include wrapping your brain around the fact that all good things must come to an end.
No worries in the brain department though. Your amazing brain is capable of incredible things!! While your brain weighs only about three pounds and is made up of about 60% fat, its storage capacity is literally unlimited. It consists of about 86 billion neurons and those neurons form connections to others, rounding up to a total of about one quadrillion (that’s 1,000 trillion) connections! Utterly amazing!
While the brain is not fully formed until the age of 25, (teenagers refuse to believe this fact, but it is true nonetheless,) it is capable of extraordinary things at any age. A newborn’s brain is only 25% of its adult size but reaches 90 to 95% of its adult size by age 6! However, because the front part of the brain (called the prefrontal cortex) is still developing and is only about 80%, pre-teens and teenagers often use a different part of the brain (called the amygdala) to make decisions and solve problems. The amygdala, however, is associated with emotions, impulses, aggression, and instinctive behavior. As teens age and the brain “remodels” itself, they are better able to reason, develop more control over impulses, and make better judgements.
Information in the amazing brain can travel at speeds up to 350 miles per hour! Wanna give all that activity a rest? Hum. That’s right, hum because you significantly limit your thought process when humming. When you hum, you stimulate a specific nerve called the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve acts like a soothing switch for the nerve system, calming it down. Creating this space between your thoughts and your nerve system can help you feel less anxious and overwhelmed. Calming the nerve system can also increase rational behavior and control rash impulses at any age.
Today’s world could surely use more people with calm nerve systems. It can help us slow down, look at things from every angle, and exhibit caution before we criticize others for not seeing things as we do. Dr. Miller can also help you with that. He or she will check your spine for misalignments, called vertebral subluxations, which disrupt the function of your nerve system. So hum your way to our office regularly and be fully prepared for your school year! Have an amazing year!

✅ What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that typically develops during the growth spurt just before puberty, most commonly between ages 10–15. While it can range from mild to severe, early signs are often subtle and painless.
📌 Key Facts About Scoliosis:
Idiopathic scoliosis (of unknown cause) makes up about 80% of cases.
It affects approximately 2–3% of the U.S. population (about 6–9 million people).
Girls are more likely than boys to develop significant curves that require treatment.
In severe cases, scoliosis can lead to chronic pain, reduced lung function, and postural deformity if left untreated.
🎯 Why Early Detection Is Critical:
Early-stage scoliosis is easier to manage with non-invasive options like chiropractic care, bracing, and posture correction exercises.
Catching scoliosis early can reduce the need for surgery later in life.
Once the spine stops growing (after puberty), correcting curvature becomes more difficult.
Early treatment can improve outcomes in function, appearance, and long-term spinal health.
🔍 Fact-Check: Do Schools Still Check for Scoliosis?
✅ — many U.S. schools no longer routinely screen for scoliosis, and here's why:
In the 1980s–1990s, scoliosis screenings were common in schools across the U.S.
Today, only a few states still mandate scoliosis screening in public schools, and even then, implementation may vary by district.
Many schools now rely on annual sports physicals, where scoliosis screening is at the discretion of the examining physician.
If it's not a school requirement or not part of a sports physical, scoliosis often goes unchecked unless a parent or caregiver initiates concern.
